Why Your Small-Town Business Needs a Website (Even If Everyone Knows You)

In a town like Cass Lake, word of mouth is powerful. People know who fixes boats, who has the best breakfast, and who to call when the furnace quits. So it's fair to ask: if everyone already knows you, why bother with a website?

Because "everyone" isn't who you think it is.

Visitors don't know you yet. Every summer, thousands of people come through Cass Lake for the lakes, the trails and Leech Lake. They don't have a neighbor to ask. They pull out a phone and search. If you're not there, the business that is gets the sale.

Your neighbors search too. Even locals look up hours, menus, phone numbers and directions online. A website with current information saves them a call and saves you from answering the same question all day.

Facebook isn't enough on its own. Social media is great for staying in touch, but posts get buried, not everyone has an account, and you don't control the platform. A website is the one place online that's fully yours.

It makes you look established. A clean, simple site tells customers you're open, you're serious, and you'll be around next year. That matters to people deciding where to spend money.

It works while you sleep. Your site answers questions at 10 PM, in the middle of winter, and on the days you're closed.

You don't need anything fancy. A good small-business website covers the basics: who you are, what you offer, where you are, when you're open, and how to reach you. Add a few real photos and you're ahead of most of the competition.
