Deer River, Winnibigosh Fishing Report

What a change 90's to mid 60's that is a change in weather. The good thing is the fishing hasn’t suffered too bad. I have been at Winnibigosh again this whole last week. The fishing has been great. I have been catching walleye's in the shallow rocks yet, 4-7 ft with a jig and minnow. This has been fun on some days you can see the fish down there rummaging around and cast right to them and you will catch them.  When we have wind that does help out the fishing.  Without wind you can catch walleyes on the flats outside the weeds in the 10-12 ft with a spinner or a shad rap covering ground, or even the big bars on the south side of the lake with a lindy rig or spinner. The perch are starting to show up on the rocks also and even on the deep humps we are getting some nice perch. Its also time to start looking for the crappies they should start showing up in their fall haunts soon.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Sand, Leech Lake Fishing Report

It sure has been a hot summer. Seems a guy is sweating everyday out there. Fishing in this weather has remained fairly steady with  some days being really good. I have been on Sand a couple days and we did good with a 1/8 oz northland gumball and a chub or a lindy and a leech. Sand has been different this year with the fish being a little bit everywhere. One minute on the weed edge the next way deep off the weed edge or sometimes on the deep humps. So you just have to move around to find the ones that are biting.

Winnie has been the other lake I have been on the last few days. Its been the same on winnie, one minute the fish are on the humps, the next the big bars, the next the shoreline its been new every time. We have had good success with the spinners lately. I have been using a 1/4 oz bullet sinker with a Northland  spinner running around 1 mph and its been working good. Now yesterday we ended up with a good bite going on a jig and minnow in 7 ft of water, but most of the fish have been a bit deeper in the 12-17 ft of water on the edges of the main break. So it goes to show don’t ever rule anything out this time of the year.

Northern Minnesota Fishing Report

As far as walleyes fishing on area lakes, the walleyes are starting to make a move from the mid lake structures back towards the shoreline, not say all the fish, but some are moving up to shoreline weed beds. It's only the end of July but with warm water temps are pushing the fish up shallow, as far as jig fishermen or ladies jig fisherwomen it's good news. as those shallow water fish can be caught wiith a jig minnow combo or on a rig with a 3 ft leader tip with a crawler or leech. The deeper walleyes are still biting a rigs tip with again leech or crawler on a 5ft to 7ft leader. Perch are also showing up on the rocks humps 12ft to 15ft range and are feeding on this years crawfish hatch, jig & minnow working well, when fishing these perch, fish just about under the boat, don't let out a lot of line, they seem to like to hide under the boat shallow. So just fish along side the boat, again this works well for perch, but walleye let a lot of line out, to get away from the boat. Larger northern pike are also starting to show up in shoeline weed beds.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Report

Another hot week of fishing with some days reaching that 80 plus degrees. With the heat and limited wind I pretty much fished winnie the whole time. Winnie has been good with most of the fish coming off the humps and bars in the main lake. Lindy rigs and leeches and crawlers have been the best bet in 22-24 ft of water. I have been using 3-5 ft snells they seem to be working best so far. What we have been doing is looking on the electronics all around the bar till we find fish and not even wetting a line till we see fish. When you find them throw out a marker and fish them don’t go wandering around where the fish are not there. I did have one morning of wind and tried the shallow rocks with a jig and minnow and picked up 2 walleye's and 12 nice perch, so there is some hope in the shallows.

I got out to Sand and Bowstring one day with limited success. I found some shallow cabbage on Bowstring that held a few fish right around the edge of the weeds that were laying on top of the water. we were using 1/8 oz gumball jigs and golden shiners.

Northern Minnesota Fishing Report

Fishing walleyes this past week has it's up and downs, with the warmer water temps the fish are changing over to more leech and crawler bite, the may fly hatch is also coming to an end on area lakes. The downs are when we have to deal with the high winds, because most of the walleyes we been catching are on mid lake structure 21ft. to 24ft. depth range. When fishing these areas you have to fish these walleyes slow and somewhat vertical. Use your electronics to locate the fish on these humps or main lake breaks. It will save a lot of time, it's called finding the spot on the spot. Look for them, like you would on a shoreline bite, check all the points, inside turns, and most importantly the sharps breaks. I like to be somewhat old fashion and throw a marker on the outside of the school of fish, when I locate on these spots, because they usually hold pretty tight. On days when this is not possible we have located fish tight in cabbage weeds, jig and minnow, or run a spinner along the edge, tip with a leech or crawler. Be safe & enjoy a great day on the water, in Northern Minnesota.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Report

Another good week of fishing. Winnie is still biting with a lot of fish starting to come in off the humps and bars on the north side of the lake.  I have been fishing the northern most humps in 22-24 ft of water. Most of these humps are big sand bars that come up off the main basin mud.  We have been starting to use leeches and crawlers alittle but the jig and minnow is still king. Out in the deeper water I have been using a 1/4 oz northland gumball jig and a shiner. Its been harder to get the spottails so when I have too I use a golden shiner, both work good. When using a lindy rig remember this time of the year you do not need the long snells  you can stick with a short 3-4 ft one. With a good wind we still got some fish in the shallows but they tended to be on the small side.

Fished Bowstring one day we did well. We got a few fish on the humps and bars, but most of our fish came from the weeds in the shallow water 6-7 ft of water.  The water is pretty green right now and I think the fish will stay shallow for awhile. I was using a jig and minnow for the whole day there also, mostly a 1/8 oz gumball and shiner. Soon we should see the spinner bite get going out there with a leech or crawler.

Sand was a little tough we had a hard time getting the walleyes to bite. Every now and then we would get a few to go but it was tough. The ones we did get were in that 10-12 ft of water right on the edge of the weeds with a jig and minnow.

Northern Minnesota Fishing Report

Walleye fishing on Grand Rapids & Deer River area lakes has been good this past week, The bite picks ups if you have cloud cover and some wind. especially in the shallows. There's still a good bite in the Tamarack flats on big Winnie 10 to 14 ft along the river channel, also main lake breaks out in front of Tamarack point 21 to 25 ft. along the edge has produced well. Fished Leech this week out of Federal Dam in Portage Bay, did well along the weed lines 12 ft. also on the rocks south of Two Points. I have been using jig minnow combo with spot tail shiners, but the spot tail shiners are done in this area till fall. I think the fish are also making there move away from minnows, as the Mitch fly's are hatching in most area lakes, but the cooler rainy weather has slowed the hatch some at this time. When the walleyes start feeding on them, rigging with leeches and crawlers will be the way to go.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Report

This week was a week where we started to see the fish start moving toward deeper water. Winnie there are still fish in the shallows around stoney, river channel and all along that north shore. There are also fish out on the humps and I think it will keep getting better out there. Naturally when fishing shallow you need a jig in the 1/8-1/16 oz range but if you go deep jump up to a 1/4 or 3/8 oz jig. We are still getting shiners but they are getting harder.

Leech is going pretty good I was out there a couple times this last week. We fished in the weeds and rocks. the rocks were good when the wind blew, the weeds were better with no wind. Jig and shiner were still king with the little 1/16 oz fireball working best in the shallow rocks.

I hit Bowstring one day also and it was decent. The landing was a bugger getting into but we did it and only got a little wet. Most of our fish came out of the deep water 16- 20 ft. We were using 1/8 oz gumballs and a shiner but I did see some people catch them with a leech and lindy rig.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Report

I hope all you have great plans for your memorial weekend with family and friends, and when we are celebrating remember our service men and women who are not.

should be a great fishing weekend, sounds like some wind is coming which will help. I have been on Sand lake and winnie this last week and when we have wind we catch fish, when it is calm we still get a few but sometimes we can go awhile without so its just a bit of a struggle at times. Lets start with winnie. The fish are still in the shallows on the big flats, Chasing shiners and little perch. Look for the fish in 7-12 ft of water  depending on your weather. we have been using 1/8 oz gumballs with the wind and 1/16 oz fireballs without. Shiners are still plentiful in the area, so stop at Freds or Bens bait for excellent bait.

Sand was about the same  fish in 8-12 ft with a jig and minnow. On Sand I checked out some of the structure away from shore and caught a few but the shoreline flats were a lot better. Again use a 1/8 oz gumball or fireball for the best results.

Grand Rapids, Winnibigosh, Leech Lake Fishing Report

Opening weekend was a decent opener, warmer water and warm weather not too bad. We spent our opener on Cass Lake fish were in 10-17 ft of water and they were biting on a northland fireball jig with a shiner.

The next few days we were on Winnie and leech. Weather was a killer 80 degree’s and sunny with no wind. It was a tough go no matter where you were. Leech was ok in 15-17ft of water by leech lake camp ground and right out front of federal dam. We did find some fish in shallow water 7-8 ft and they bit pretty good at times. We were using a 1/8 oz northland gumball jig and a shiner. Nothing was fast and furious but we at least could pluck a few out now and then.

Winnie was ok also fish were in front of high banks, stoney and the rock pile. Most fish were in 15-17 ft of water again all scattered around. You go over a few fish and get a couple bites and then go awhile till you hit some more. Again nothing real constant but ok. Once the clouds and wind came up Friday and sat it started to turn on in the shallows. Then we were getting them in 8-9 ft again with a northland gumball and a shiner. I think this will hold true for awhile yet. So look for good fishing when you have clouds or wind if none of that just keep plucking away.

Grand Rapids, Deer River, Winnibigosh Fishing Report

May,6th 2010Hope everybody is getting ready for the big opening day which is coming up soon. Make sure you have new line on your reels, rods cleaned, trailer bearings greased, motor all tuned up, and all your tackle in order for the big day.Up here the pan fish have been starting to turn on pretty good. Lots of reports of people catching crappies and Sunnies. When the weather is warm for a few days the shallow water is producing panfish in the shallows, as little as 2-3 ft of water at times. Pitching a jig with a minnow or plastic tail has been working good, also is the all reliable bobber thrown into the weed edges has been good. If they are really spooky you might want to try just a plain hook with a little minnow and throw it up there and let it do its magic. After a cold front goes through look to the edges of the shallow water, they might have dropped off into that deeper water. With this use your electronics and troll around till you hit a school and cast up to them.As the water warms we will see more and more fish in the shallows getting ready to spawn. When Walleye opener starts we should see some good fishing. Look for them in areas where you usually hit on memorial weekend. Should be mostly jig and minnow but don’t rule out lindy rigs and leeches this year.

4/26/10

It’s that time of the year again, time to go through your rods, reels, and tackle. Every year they have something new on the market. A hot new lure, a rod that is lighter and more sensitive, and a new stronger/tougher kind of line.

Let’s take some time and talk about line. I get questions each year about what line people in my boat should be using, when they go back home to fish with their own rigs.

Here I will tell you what I use and why:

Lets start with jigging. For myself and my clients I use Trilene XL 6lb. I know some people like 8 lb., but I believe the 6 lb. is a nice small diameter and very subtle for most of my jigging. It gives the jig a “real life” look as it bounces along in the water, and lets the jig do its “thing”. The strength of 6 lb. is great, I can’t remember the last time I lost a fish due to breakage from it. Day in and day out, I say, stick with 6 lb. Trilene XL for jigging.

For rigging I still use the 6 lb. Trilene XL. I like the stretch it has when you are rigging, especially deeper fish. It gives a little forgiveness if you don’t feel the bite right away. The only thing different is that for my leader I use a 6 lb. fluorocarbon called Vanish. The reason I use Vanish as a leader is just what the label says, it vanishes. It is pretty much invisible in the water and gives you that little advantage.

My next presentation is spinners. We seem to be using them more and more to catch walleyes. I like to go up to 8lb. Trilene when using spinners, whether it’s XL or XT it doesn’t seem to matter much. The heavier line is a bit more forgiving for the twisting that you get when you run the spinners, it also is stronger when you pull through the weeds and have your sinker rubbing against your line.

Now for my last presentation, trolling cranks. I prefer the Fire Line. Fire Line is not a braid or a mono, it is a thermal filament fishing line made from micro dyneema, the worlds strongest fiber. What you get is a lot of strength in a smaller diameter line. I use 10 lb. test and it has the diameter of around 4 lb mono. With the small diameter my cranks run a lot smoother. I also like the strength of the line, it does not get bit off by Northern pike as easily.

So, there you have it, why I use the line that I do and when I use it; jigging, rigging, spinners, and trolling cranks. Remember to change your line at the beginning of the season, and depending on how much you fish during the year you may be changing it several times.

With the warmer weather, the crappies and sunfish are starting to bite like crazy, Look for crappies off to the sides of there deeper winter holding areas in shallower water. Sunfish are starting to show up in weedbed areas. Waxworms are a good combination bait for both species. Some places the crappies and sunnies are together.

12/30/09 - Cass Lake.

Fishing has really picked up the last few days, with the barometric pressure returning to normal after the big storm. Walleye are biting in 14-20 foot on the Cass Lake chain, shinners working best, with glow in the dark jigs and chartruse colors. They hit aggressivly yesterday for the first time in about a week. The Northern Pike are also starting to feed again, with a few 10 pound fish being seen in the spear houses. Live suckers are bringing in the pike, and daredevil turners are starting to work now that we have snow cover. Perch are active in 8-20 foot of water, use small minnows and lots of action on your jig. Good luck fishing over the New Years!

12/15/09 - Deer River, Minnesota, Lake Winnie.

It sure looks like Mother Nature is going to cooperate and bless all ice anglers with good ice this year. The temperatures are forecasted to be well below the averages in next coming days. I've been hearing good reports about the ice and most anglers are bringing fish home. Lake Winnie has 8-10 inches of good ice and anglers have been using atv's to navigate to their fishing hot spots. Other local lakes have 10-12 inches of good ice. I like to fish walleyes at first ice, because they can be found in the fall hot spots. This makes it a little safer and these tasty fish will still be found lurking the shallow waters in search of some food. The key is to make as little noise as possible. Drill holes well before dusk, so you can jump from hole to hole without the power auger blasting through the ice. Also, when moving from hole to hole try not to pound your feet on the ice. Now is the time to rip some lips, so get out on the ice and have a good time. Be safe and always remember to take a kid fishing.

9/7/09 - Deer River, Minnesota, Winnibigoshish and Cut Foot Sioux.  Well summer is finally here but you better be thinking fall patterns to catch most any species you might be after. I have fished Lake Winnie and Cut Foot Sioux the last few days and the Crappie and Walleye fishing was pretty decent. With the wind blowing from the south east we found the Walleyes shallow in 6 to 8 foot of water and we have been using 1/16 and 1/8 oz. Fireball Jigs tipped with a minnow to catch them, also Northland Roach Rigs and a night Crawler worked well also. Fishing Walleye in Cut Foot also produced some good action! There we used strictly Roach Rigs with a Crawler or Leech and caught lots of nice eating nice fish. But the last two weeks the Crappie fishing has really been good and it’s not just on Cut Foot but many of the other area lakes are kicking out good numbers of these tasty panfish. It seems if you look of the first break down into the basin is where you start to get a silty bottom and that is where you will spot those schools of Crappie. Once you see a school drop a small Fire ball jig tipped with a minnow and you will have a lot of fun catching some great eating fish.

We at the MN Fishing Pros hope these tips help, good luck and be safe!!

8/26/09 - Deer River Minnesota, Winnibigoshish, Sand Lake, Bowstring Lake, Ball Club Lake, After our week of heat we are back to normal cool days.  The walleyes have been a little tough lately.  I have been on Sand, Bowstring, and Winnie for the walleyes most fish we have been catching in the shallows on the weed line and also a few out deep but nothing like last week. The jig and minnow on the weed line has worked the best followed by spinners with a crawler and trolling Rapala's as a last resort.  We are getting perch and Northern have been biting right along with the walleye. On these area lakes the crappies are just starting to show up in the deep fall haunts so there is lot to do.  Perch and Northern have been going like crazy on Ball Club Lake.  Jig and minnow have been best.  The perch are up on the shallows and the Northerns deeper and they are hungry.  Good Luck Fishing!

8/5/09 - Deer River Minnesota, Winnibigoshish and Leech Lake area, Water temps are still only a cool 66 degrees, unbelievable for this time of year, plus the wind continues to blow. But dispite it all the Walleyes continue to cooperate. On Lake Winnie the past few days have found the Walleyes still out deep on the many bars and humps. Northland Roach Rigs tipped with a nite crawler seems to be what they want, but some days a jig and minnow works well too. Perch action has been heating up as well on the same kind of structure and a Northland Gum Ball jig has been working the best for the jumbo Perch.
Leech Lake from what I have heard has been good also, a spinner and minnow trolled in 10 to 15 foot has been turning alot of good Walleye action and the big jumbo perch have also been taking the spinners also. Portage Bay around the five mile point area and two points have been the hot areas still.

Well even though the temps outside haven't been all that warm and the water temps are still below 60 on most lakes I have been fishing, the walleyes seem to be starting to move to the deeper water. Fished Bowstring, Winnie And trout lake the last few days and I have been getting most of our fish in the 19-22 ft of water. The bars are starting to go. We are still able to get shiners so the northland gumball and a shiner is my bait of choice. I have had to go up a notch on size in some instances so now I try to use a 1/8 oz or 1/4 oz depending on the wind. If the wind is blowing I think the shoreline bite is still good but we have had some calm days and the humps seem to outproduce the shoreline. So its time to break out the lindy rods and we will probably have to start thinking about leeches and crawlers real soon up here.

Deer River, Minnesota, Winnibigoshish and Leech Lake area. Walleye Fishing On the two big lakes continues to be good to getting better every day. I fished Leech last Wednesday and caught good numbers of fish under the slot, plus alot of fish in the slot! It seemed the magic depth was 15 to 16 foot and again the Northland Fireball Jig tipped with a shiner was what they really wanted. Lake Winnie continues to produce good numbers of Walleyes fishing a jig and minnow in 8 to 10 foot of water. Some days you have to move around a little to find them it seems but at the end of the day we are usually in pretty good shape. Bait dealers still have spot tailed shiners left but starting to get low so that means it wont be long and the go to bait will be a Lindy Rig and Leech! Good luck and good fishing.

FROGGYS FISHING REPORT
Cass Lake: The fishing on Cass has been getting better since the water is warming up. We are at 64 degrees. The walleyes are biting on the north end of Cass in 25 to 30 feet of water during the day. Shiners are still the man bait of choice, but the leech and night crawlers are going strong also. The late evening bit on rapalas started about a week ago. There has been some nice walleye being caught at night trolling on north cedar bar and the narrows. There has been a few muskies being caught but more follows then strikes but with the water temps warming that can soon change in a hurry. Northern pike have been more aggressive. And most families are having a good time with a minnow and a bobber catching northern. The crappie fishing has slowed down.
Lake Andrusia: The walleye have been biting in 18 feet of water. Shiners and a jig or a fathead works well on this lake. Work the break lines and drop offs. There is also a nice hump to work between the two rivers that produce walleyes all summer long. This is a nice little lake to fish. Not only does it hold big walleye and good numbers of them it is known for it big northern pike. Take a sucker minnow and sit on the outside of the weed line or on the edge of the cabbage.
Pike Bay: The walleye fishing has been good. The fish have been caught on center bar or working the edge of the cabbage line in 15 to 20 feet of water. There have been a few nice perch being caught also. These have been with a fathead and a jig in 6 to 12 feet of water.
Remember to stay safe and have fun fishing. Please practice catch and release for the future.

Froggys Fishing report
CASS LAKE: The fishing has started to pick up on CASS. The north end has been the most productive. Walleyes on the turtle bar are being caught in 12 to 20 feet on water using a shiner and a jig. Leeches and night crawlers started last week and will only get better has the water started to warm up. Pike hole has been also boating walleye. This year the Crappie fishing on Cass has been outstanding. The nice thing about fishing the Cass Lake chain is the fact that you can change lakes by boat.
Pike Bay: This is a lake that is outstanding and has been over looked for years. Ever year this lake produces big walleyes. The north end of pike has been doing well since opener. Find the weed line and work about 12 to 13 feet of water. This lake is like Cass it has a lot of structure and offers all kinds of different kinds of fishing that will produce walleyes. We are look forward to the Muskie opener. This is a very good lake to fish if you are looking for the big 50 inch plus fish.
Andrusia: They have been getting a lot of walleyes at the mouth of the outlet in the evenings. The inlet mouth is also a great place to fish. The northern pike fishing has been picking up.
Leech Lake: The fishing on this lake is back. It has been unbelievable to say the least. Theirs alot of fish being caught. You are going to have the through a few back with the slot on the lake but a jig and a shiner or redtail can’t be beat. There are also jumbo perch going. Duck point, Pine point, hard woods and Goose Island.

Grand Rapids, Deer River area fishing report-Walleye fishing continues to be good despite mother natures best attempts to make it as uncomfortable as possible, if you can handle the cold the Walleyes are cooperating. Water temps are still only 58 and a Northland Gum Ball jig tipped with a shiner continues to be the bait of choice. Water depths can change day to day so keep a open mind out there and try everything until you catch a few fish.We hear good reports still off Big Winnie, Round , Leech, and Sand Lake. Big Winnie the last two days has been very good in Musky Bay and some good reports also up around Mallard Point.

Grand Rapids, Deer River fishing report

Wind and cold that is the name of the game so far this week for us.Water temps are still 58-58 degrees which is cold for this time of the year. Round lake has had a decent bite we have been catching walleyes in 8-10 ft when the wind is blowing and 11-13 when its sunny. we have ben using northland fireballs or gumballs tipped with a shiner or chub.
Winnibigosh has been good also I have been fishing Tamarack flats and up the north shore depending on the wind direction. The fish seem to be deeper there with most fish coming 10 to13, and again jig and mionnow being the bait of choice.
Lastly is Sand lake the fish in Sand have been a little fickle one day they bite like gangbusters and the next you have to work lie a dog for them. I have been catching them between 9-16ft they are all over the place. Jig and minnow there too.
So even thow its been cold and windy we still have been doing pretty decent as far as the fishing goes and I think the wind has helped us put fish in the boat, especially with all these cold fronts.
good luck fishing
